Tabane-Noshi: Narrow strips of dried abalone bundled together in the middle, it was the ritual offering to God in Japanese Shinto religion. It also is used to refer to a bound bundle of any kind of ribbon strips. One of the Noshi-monyou patterns. This motif is often seen in the masterpieces of furisode kimonos, from the middle of the Edo era, created by various techniques. It remains a very popular motif in design.

More info - the noshi bundle used to be attached to a gift (some sources mention gifts as in tithes or other obligatory gifts). It sounds the same as the word for "stretch" or extend, so it implies increase, prosperity etc. & is therefore an auspicious motif. Nowadays it is usually depicted as a bundle of decorative ribbons or fabric strips (sometimes the edges look a bit raggedy, so they look more like the abalone). Noshi decorations are attached to gifts like wedding gifts.

Non-Japanese people who don't know anything about the motif always seem to be attracted by noshi - I think it is the dynamic and decorative shape.

Auberginefleur

If only if it were the silver/grey satin I had sought instead of metallic silver! Moral: read carefully before purchasing.

Below not mine, but would look nice with a furisode.
