Koshihimo, you *have* to have them, but storing them away properly without getting tangled, preferably small sized and easy to grab too can be a bit of a search sometimes.
Now people in Japan who do kitsuke on other people often fold the muslin ones into pentagon shapes.
I found that the foldingmethod works on synthetic koshihimo, that look similar, aswell but it was a bit more tricky to fold into a good shape due it's slippery texture.
